The traditional 3 step process for quitting smoking.

| Back to Home Page |

To go from being a smoker to a non-smoker is a process. You don't just wake up one morning after smoking for a long time and it's over (although I have met ex-smokers who tell me they have done just that). My personal experience is that it took about sixty days to go through the process that got me from the point where I was a smoker to the point where I was a non-smoker. My book will help get you there fast but I still think you will need some time to do it. What follows is the traditional 3 stage process that every smoking program I have ever seen will take you through.

1:
The usual first stage in the quitting process is the logic factor. You arrive at a point where you realize that smoking is not a smart thing to do. There is no logical reason why you can justify doing it. It costs way too much money and it is very unhealthy.

2: The second stage is the fear stage.  Smoking will not just make you unhealthy, it will kill you. If you don't already know that or are in doubt of that fact, then you might as well leave this website and good luck to you. However; I don't think you're going to be very happy with what happens to you unless you get lucky and die in a car accident or have a dead-before-you-hit-the-ground heart attack (they usually happen in your 40s and 50s). If your smoking habit kills you, it is going to be a lot worse than that. You will have lots of time to regret your decision to smoke.

Sometimes: they combine those stages by pointing out that cigarettes are the only product legally sold on the market today that will kill you if used as directed. That not only makes you afraid to smoke, it makes you feel stupid for knowing that and then going ahead and doing it anyway! That's a nice combination of fear and logic.

3: The traditional 3rd stage is: call 911. Get some help. Pills, patches, gums, herbal remedies, smoking cessation programs like those offered by the American Cancer Society and the Heart and Lung association. There is also accupuncture, hypnosis and my personal favourite, laser therapy.
